BIO

Lizzie Pike, a South London-based artist, draws inspiration from her upbringing in the British countryside to create intricate rugs crafted from wool. Her artistic practice is deeply rooted in folklore stories and her personal memories of growing up surrounded by nature. Through her work, she seeks to evoke a sense of the otherworldly, blending folklore narratives and traditions with contemporary concerns about the decay of our environment due to climate change.

Starting her creative process with watercolor paintings Lizzie collects patterns, textures, colours and intricate details from her surroundings. Assembling these with folklore narratives, Lizzie translates these observations onto paper, often allowing the diluted paint to create its own path. She captures the ethereal beauty and captivating scenes that later inform her rugs. As she meticulously hand tufts each thread, Lizzie's artistic process embodies a deep connection to nature, serving as a reminder of the interconnectedness of all living things.

Lizzie's rugs go beyond their utilitarian purpose, transforming into portals that transport viewers to a realm where reality and fantasy converge. They serve as visual representations of cultural heritage, reflecting both the rich traditions of storytelling and the urgent need to address the ecological challenges we face. By intertwining the natural and historical use of wool with contemporary themes, she highlights the interconnectedness of our past, present, and future. Lizzie’s rugs serve as reminders of the beauty that surrounds us, and the pressing need to preserve it for future generations.
